Key Learnings
- 01Transfer hooks — dev code that runs on every transfer and can block sells — are the honeypot mechanism our safety gate rejects most often, ahead of classic freeze authority.
- 02In our screening data the sell-blocking flags ranked: transfer hooks first, active freeze authority second, then pausable transfers, permanent delegates and default-frozen accounts roughly tied.
- 032,757 pools we watched died mid-watch, the median just 1.6 minutes after graduation — a drained pool, not a honeypot, is often the real reason a sell returns nothing.
Clarification (September 2, 2026): Safety-gate behavior in this guide describes policy and screening telemetry, not private trade performance.
First: is it a honeypot or just a failed transaction?
A failed swap with an error about slippage or routing is usually benign — thin pools move fast, and a retry with higher slippage or a smaller size often goes through. A honeypot is different: the transaction itself is rejected, every time, at any size, while other wallets (the insiders') sell freely. The six causes below are ranked by how often our automated safety gate catches each one on live pump.fun and Raydium tokens.
1. Transfer hooks — the modern honeypot
Token-2022's transfer-hook extension lets the token creator attach custom code that runs on every transfer — including your sell — and can veto it. This is the sell-blocker the screening workflow rejects most often, ahead of the classic freeze trick. The funded-entry policy treats an active transfer hook as an instant disqualifier, and the analyzer checks it on every analysis.
2. Freeze authority — the classic freeze honeypot
If freeze authority is active, the creator can freeze your token account after you buy; frozen accounts cannot send or sell. It's the second most frequent sell-blocking flag in our gate data, and one of the oldest tricks on Solana. The check takes seconds and is covered in our safety-checks explainer — revoked or you skip.
3. Paused transfers and default-frozen accounts
Two more Token-2022 extensions round out the honeypot family: pausable transfers (the dev flips a switch and all trading stops) and accounts that default to frozen (every new buyer starts frozen and must be manually thawed — insiders get thawed, you don't). We see each at roughly the same rate as permanent delegates. All are visible in the mint account before you buy.
"If a token can stop you from selling, that decision was made before you bought — every blocking mechanism is visible on-chain in advance."
4. Permanent delegate — they don't block your sell, they take the tokens
A permanent delegate can transfer tokens out of your wallet without your signature. You go to sell and the balance is simply gone. Our real-money desk refuses any token carrying confiscation-capable extensions, no exceptions — because no exit strategy survives an attacker who can empty your wallet first.
5. The pool is drained — nothing to sell into
Often the cause isn't a honeypot at all: the liquidity is gone. Of the thousands of graduations our engine has watched live, 2,757 pools died during the watch window — the median only 1.6 minutes after graduation. Your sell "fails" because there's nothing on the other side. Unburned LP is the leading indicator: our gate flags pools where the deployer kept control of liquidity, because that's the wallet that drains it. Rug speed data here.
6. Slippage and routing — the recoverable one
If none of the above apply, your sell is probably failing on slippage tolerance or a congested route. Raise slippage in steps, cut the order into smaller pieces, or wait out the volatility spike. This is the only cause on this list you can fix after buying.
Spot a Solana honeypot before you buy — it's all visible in advance
Every genuine sell-blocker above lives in the token's mint account, readable by anyone before buying. Paste any contract address into MemeAssist and the report flags transfer hooks, freeze authority, pausable transfers, permanent delegates and LP status in one pass — the same gate our own real-funds desk trades behind. If you want to run the checks by hand, follow the free 7-step workflow, and check whether the supply is bundled while you're at it.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my Solana token sell keep failing?
Either a honeypot mechanism (transfer hook, frozen account, paused transfers, permanent delegate), a drained liquidity pool, or a benign slippage/routing failure. If the sell fails at any size while the chart still moves, suspect a honeypot; if the pool shows near-zero liquidity, the rug already happened.
How do I check if a Solana token is a honeypot before buying?
Read the mint account: freeze authority must be revoked, and there should be no Token-2022 transfer hook, pausable-transfer, default-frozen or permanent-delegate extensions. Any scanner that surfaces token extensions shows these; MemeAssist checks all of them automatically on every report.
Can a frozen Solana token account be unfrozen?
Only by the wallet holding freeze authority — the same person who froze you. In practice honeypot creators never thaw victims, so treat frozen tokens as lost and treat any token with active freeze authority as unbuyable.
What is the most common reason a meme coin can't be sold?
Very often a drained pool rather than a honeypot. In our live monitoring, 2,757 watched pools died — median 1.6 minutes after graduation. The sell mechanically works; there's just no liquidity left to receive it.
